Weekly Football Highlights

The football season is in full swing now with all the major European leagues in play.

Everything worth talking about in football

The Spanish and Italian leagues joined the action this weekend, meaning the season is in full swing now with all the major European leagues in play. Once again there were some surprise results starting on Friday, with the very first game from Spain where Sevilla lost to Osasuna and in France, Lille were held to a draw by Nantes.

Saturday was a very busy day with a number of high-scoring matches in the English Premier League. Manchester City made light work of Bournemouth, beating them 4-0, and Manchester United continued on their dismal early season form as they lost to Brentford by the same heavy scoreline.

The mood on opposite sides of Manchester could not be more different as City look like early favourites for yet another league title whereas United look in absolute shambles and will be very worried about their next match against old rivals Liverpool. Arsenal have had a strong start to the season with a second win, this time against Leicester.

Saturday’s matches

On Saturday we saw another convincing win for Paris SG, this time at home to Montpellier.

In Italy, there were wins for both Milan giants, with AC Milan overcoming Udinese and Inter winning away at Lecce.

In Germany, four out of the six matches finished in a draw whilst in Spain, Barcelona surprisingly could only manage a goalless draw at home to Rayo Vallecano, in their first game of the season.

On Sunday

Sunday’s highlight was a hugely entertaining London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham. A 96th minute Harry Kane equaliser meant these two contenders for the top four had to be content with a point.

Nottingham Forest won their first home match back in the top division with a hard-fought three points over West Ham.

Elsewhere, Bayern won 2-0 against Wolfsburg to make it two wins out of two. And there were narrow wins for Real Madrid and Valencia in Spain as well as FC Porto in Portugal and AS Roma in Italy.

Liverpool had to be content with a second draw of the season as they struggled against Crystal Palace at home, having new star striker Darwin Nunez sent off in the process. They are therefore already four points behind Manchester City and will know they can ill afford to drop any more points even at this early stage in the season.

In Italy there were high scoring wins for Napoli and Juventus and in Spain Atletico Madrid won comfortably against Getafe to get their season off to a good start. Over the next few days, most major teams and competitions take a few days off with only the qualification rounds of European competitions being played. As well as a full schedule from the Championship for fans of English football beyond the Premier League.
