We were treated to a weekend of high-scoring matches with many of the big teams winning by large margins and some surprise results were also thrown into the mix. With no action from the Premier League on Friday evening, we saw wins for favourites Lyon, Gladbach and Galatasaray in their respective leagues. Sevilla, however, were unable to win their match against Valladolid so it’s only one point from two matches for them so far.

The early kick-off in England on Saturday saw a very competitive match between Tottenham and Wolves just go the way of the hosts with Harry Kane scoring the solitary goal. Aston Villa’s poor start to the season continued as they lost to Crystal Palace. Leicester also continue to struggle, losing at home to Southampton this time out. Arsenal put in a commanding performance as they beat Bournemouth by three goals to nil.

In France, Marseille beat Nantes and Lens impressively went to Monaco and won 4-1 whilst in Germany the shock of the weekend saw Dortmund lose at home against Bremen with the visitors scoring three goals in the final 5 minutes as Dortmund collapsed. Elsewhere there were comfortable wins for Real Madrid, Porto and Inter in their respective leagues but Rangers were held to a draw in Scotland.

Sunday was a great day, with some top-quality matches producing some surprising results. It all started with Leeds winning convincingly against Chelsea, who saw new signing Koulibaly sent off. At the same time, Brighton won at West Ham, leaving the Londoners without a point after three matches. The late kick-off in England saw Newcastle storm to a 3-1 lead against Manchester City, putting in an impressive display. The defending champions showed their spirit though as they fought back and the match finished in a 3-3 draw.

Elsewhere, Paris SG put down yet another marker as they beat Lille 7-1 away from home, an ominous result and performance with Mbappe scoring a hattrick. Bayern Munich also scored seven away from home, against Bochum, showing they are in a different class to most of the rest of the Bundesliga. In Italy, there was a big win for Napoli over Monza and Atalanta and Milan played out a 1-1 draw. Barcelona made up for dropping points on the opening day of the season with a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad in the late kick-off on Sunday.

Finally, on Monday night the much-anticipated match between Manchester United and Liverpool took place. Much of the build-up focused on the rivalry between these two teams, the off field problems for United and the poor start to the season both have had. On the pitch though, United started far the better and were worthy winners of an entertaining and passionate match. Elsewhere on Monday, the weekend was rounded off with wins for Fenerbahce in Turkey whilst in Italy Roma beat Cremonese and Sampdoria and Juventus played out a goalless draw.
