Eurovision 2023 saw a second-time winner as Loreen won for Sweden!
Sweden made history when they were crowned the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest winners. Loreen managed to win the competition with a total of 583 points with her song “Tattoo”. It was the second time coming out on top, having won with “Euphoria” in 2012, becoming just the second act and the first female to achieve that feat. The win also brought Sweden level with Ireland for the most wins overall, as it was their seventh. At the same time, their duty to host the 2024 Eurovision competition will now fall on the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s “Waterloo”, following their success in 1974.
Finland made things extremely tense at the end of the Eurovision live results show as the public showed their support for Käärijä’s “Cha Cha Cha” routine. Except for these two acts, others failed to challenge the Eurovision results.
Hosted in Liverpool by the United Kingdom and with some Ukrainian influence after they won the competition last year, the 2023 Eurovision event went off without a hitch, as it provided a flawless and seamless night. There were no mishaps that a live music event could have, with each act managing to perform without issue.
The presenting team of Graham Norton, Hannah Waddingham, Alesha Dixon, and Ukrainian singer Julia Sanina all appeared to be able to achieve what they had set out to do. There were a few nervous moments during the Eurovision final results portion, though, as Iceland’s representative appeared to make life a little difficult with his announcement dressed like “Bane” from “Batman”.
The UK finished second in the 2022 edition with Sam Ryder’s “Space Man” entry. Ukraine had won but could not host, so Liverpool was chosen as the venue.
Sweden will host the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest after winning this year. It will coincide with the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s win in 1974 and be the seventh time the country has hosted it, having last done so in 2016.
Luxembourg has already confirmed that they will be returning to the competition in 2024.
Eurovision voting comes in two forms: a professional panel, known as the jury, and the public, who both cast their votes at the end of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Once the voting has been conducted and verified, the results of Eurovision can be determined and announced.
The jury consists of five professionals who work within the music industry in some capacity. This could be as a singer, DJ, composer, producer, or lyricist. The jury requires there to be a balance between age, gender, and profession, while they each need to be citizens of the country they represent.
The public vote allows viewers from around the world – as of the 2023 competition – to cast their vote for their favourite act. People are not allowed to vote for their own country to keep things as fair as possible.
The results of the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest went right down to the wire, even though it seemed Loreen would be the runaway winner after the jury votes were revealed. After these sets of results were provided, Sweden was at the top of the list of 26 countries that had competed. They achieved 340 points, 163 points more than Israel in second (177 points).
However, tension built once the televoting started, as the eventual winners had to wait until their result from this section of the vote was revealed, the final one of the night. Finland had managed to win the overall public vote as they were granted 376 from the public, taking their total to 562 after obtaining 150 from the jury. However, as highlighted by the final results that Eurovision had left to call, it was not enough.
Sweden and Loreen would ultimately win as they came second in the televoting process with 243 votes, enough to take back the top spot from their neighbouring Nordic country and take home the prize once again.
The final Eurovision results table was as follows:

ABBA is undeniably the most famous Eurovision Song Contest winner, as the band achieved global stardom with their appearance on the show and the final Eurovision result. The Swedish group is one of the most successful music acts of all time and one of the best-selling music groups in history.
While ABBA is arguably the golden child of the competition, other famous acts include Conchita Wurst, Johnny Logan, Netta, and even Celine Dion. The “My Heart Will Go On” songstress managed to win for Switzerland in 1988 and has never looked back as she continues to perform in locations such as Las Vegas after being highly successful in the global charts.
Loreen will likely go down in history as one of the most famous artists to win Eurovision. She has won it twice after achieving global success with “Euphoria” in 2012.
Johnny Logan is a two-time winner as a singer in the Eurovision Song Contest. He represented Ireland, winning in 1980 and 1987. He was the only person to win twice before Loreen achieved it in 2023.
Despite not winning in 2014, Conchita Wurst became a global name because of her appearance. The drag queen from Austria wore a gold dress, but the most memorable thing was the fabulous beard.
