The 2023/24 Bundesliga season begins on August 18 and will run until May 18. The top division of German football contains 18 teams who all have differing ambitions for the new campaign, and we’ve got you covered with our extensive Bundesliga odds markets.
The Bundesliga is one of the most popular football leagues in the world. It attracts fans from right around Europe and further afield with its quality players, atmospheric stadiums and passionate fan bases.
There are plenty of opportunities to bet on the Bundesliga in 2023/24. In this article we take a look at some of the best betting markets, provide guidance for those unfamiliar with the Bundesliga betting tips, and explore in more detail some of the teams taking part this season.
With every team in the Bundesliga set to play each of their counterparts home and away, there will be a total of 306 matches in the 2023/24 season. That means there will be plenty of opportunities to bet on Bundesliga games over the course of the next nine months.
The most common market, of course, is the one for the match result. This is also the most obvious to understand: a punter must simply pick whether the home or away team will win, or whether the game will finish as a draw.
Often, though, there are better options out there. Alternatives include match result and both teams to score, match result and over/under goals, and handicap betting.
The first two are examples of combination bets, where two outcomes are combined into a single wager. Meanwhile handicap betting is an excellent choice when there is a clear favourite to win a particular encounter.
For instance, if Bayern Munich are playing Darmstadt at home, the odds available on a win for the champions would be tiny. You would therefore have to wager a huge stake to make even a small profit.
Handicap betting gives an artificial advantage to the underdog – a -2 handicap would in effect hand Darmstadt a two-goal lead. Tipping Bayern to win in this market is akin to predicting they will win the match by a three-goal margin or more.
Double chance is a bet which allows you to tip two different outcomes, such as draw and away win. This could be a good choice when you fancy the underdog to pull off a result but are not convinced they will manage to pick up all three points.
There is also the half-time / full-time market. If you think Borussia Dortmund will ultimately beat Augsburg but reckon they might take a while to get going, you could tip a draw at half-time and a Dortmund win after 90 minutes.
You can also focus on a particular team. Examples of this include team A to score in both halves, team B to win both halves, and team A to score the first goal. There are more obscure options too, such as total corners and total cards. For a local derby like Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Köln, the cards market could be worth exploring.
Another betting option is provided by the outright markets, in which bettors predict the outcome of a season-long event. This could be the Bundesliga winner, the teams that finish in the top four, or the side who will be relegated.
Bayern Munich have won the Bundesliga in each of the last 10 seasons, and they are strong favourites to do so again this year. Thomas Tuchel’s team is by far the strongest in the division and the recent signing of Harry Kane could prove to be the final piece of the jigsaw at the Allianz Arena.
Bettors may therefore prefer the winner without Bayern market, which offers the chance to predict which team other than the champions will finish highest in the league. Borussia Dortmund will expect to push Bayern closest, but it could be worth keeping an eye on RB Leipzig despite a summer in which they lost several key players.
Leipzig beat Bayern 3-0 in the DFL-Supercup in August. It would be a stretch to predict that Marco Rose’s men will outperform Tuchel’s side over the course of a 34-game season, but they showed on that occasion that they are able to compete with Bayern in a one-off match. That bodes well for what lies ahead.
The top four battle promises to be intriguing and bettors will be focused on that final CL spot in particular. The odds available on Bayern, Dortmund and Leipzig are not particularly appealing, but the race for fourth looks to be wide open.
Union Berlin grabbed it last term but the question is whether they will be able to punch above their weight again. Freiburg also outperformed expectations in 2022/23, while Bayer Leverkusen made great progress under Xabi Alonso. If you prefer to tip an outsider, perhaps take a look at Borussia Mönchengladbach or Wolfsburg.
As for the relegation battle, the two favourites to go down are the teams that came up from the 2. Bundesliga, Darmstadt and Heidenheim. The latter’s rise to the top tier has been remarkable but they may struggle in the Bundesliga, especially against the top teams.
Stuttgart, Augsburg, Bochum and Hoffenheim are also among the contenders for the drop. Before making your predictions, make sure you check out the odds to see if your choice represents good value or not.
The outright markets are particularly popular before the start of the season, but do not forget to check back regularly to see how the prices shift throughout the campaign.
Football is a team sport, so it is no surprise that team markets dominate our Bundesliga bets tips. But there are also numerous options to place wagers on individual players, both within individual games and in the season overall.
The best examples within match markets are anytime goalscorer, first goalscorer and last goalscorer. This is where you can predict a particular player to find the back of the net, either as the first or last goalscorer, or simply at any point during the encounter.
It is worth doing your research in this area. If you find out that Dani Olmo has scored for RB Leipzig in each of his last four appearances against Eintracht Frankfurt, he could be an astute pick.
Look at tactics too. If you have deduced that, say, Mainz have slow defenders who struggle with speed in behind, you might fancy someone like Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani to have some joy against them.
Occasionally you can also bet on a player to receive a yellow card, or even to be sent off.
For German Bundesliga betting Bundesliga tips related to individual players, the most obvious is the highest goalscorer. As the name suggests, this is where bettors predict which footballer will score more goals than any of his peers in Germany’s top division.
Harry Kane is the favourite following his move to Bayern Munich from Tottenham Hotspur. Kane scored goals for fun in the Premier League and his presence up front for Bayern makes them a much better team. The Bavarians lacked a proven top-class goalscorer last term, but now they have a worthy successor to Robert Lewandowski.
But this is not a foregone conclusion. Kane could take a while to adapt to his new surroundings, or he could suffer a season-ending injury. That is why others may look at Randal Kolo Muani of Eintracht Frankfurt, Sebastien Haller of Borussia Dortmund, or Niclas Füllkrug of Werder Bremen.
Moreover, Kane is not Bayern’s only gifted attacker. Serge Gnabry should score plenty of goals this campaign, while Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala will be aiming to chip in regularly too. In truth, though, all of those players will struggle to keep pace with Kane when it comes to putting the ball in the back of the net.
